During the 1800’s, exclusive fishing clubs had sprung up on the more famous of the Massachusetts and Long Island salter streams.By the turn of the century, dam building and habitat degradation precipitated the decline of the fishery and salter populations were reduced to a remnant of their former abundance. A pack of piranha-like Bluefish could turn a school of salties into ribbon within seconds, not to mention the stripers or seals casually cruising the brackish estuaries. The flawless red and white fins are sometimes the only way to spot these fish in the river.
Big brookies run with the salmon too which is bonous. The river has undergone extensive and costly rehabilitation thanks to the work of the local Trout Unlimited Chapter and the Sea-run Brook Trout Coalition. I've never been, I doubt I'd fish it, but some day I plan an observation visit. In centuries passed, the sea-run brook trout, or “salters,” that take refuge in the starwort seams and log sweepers of Red Brook enticed anglers from around the country to the numerous coastal streams of New England that supported these sea-faring specks.
Trout rejoin their freshwater brethren better … The fish in New Brunswick were eerily similar to those of Cape Cod, small cone head streamers with some flash were deadly. I won't name it here but it's quite famous and no secret. And please tell your friends about SRBTC.
